How do birds stay warm in winter? With their downy feathers, of course — but a cozy scarf can’t hurt, either. Includes my curious discoveries on the back of each card. Blank inside.
Text on the back of this card:
Here’s a mourning dove fun fact: some of their feathers disintegrate into a fine powder. This talc helps them waterproof their feathers. Apparently herons do the same thing.
Mourning doves eat mostly seeds, unlike many other birds who dine on insects when they can get them. Gardeners, take note! We can celebrate the mourning doves since they eliminate seeds that would otherwise become weeds in our garden beds.
We see these doves all year round in Vermont, but I’ve learned that the winter doves are likely the male partners who stick around while females and young ones fly to warmer areas for the cold months.
