Once I brought home two shorthaired cats from the humane society: a three-toed tabby named Henry and a quiet, aqua-eyed gray cat named Tennyson.
A few weeks later I looked at photos from early on. I stopped on one photo, then looked at Tennyson. Wait, I thought. Tennyson had short hair when he got here. Now, he was fluff all over. They must have given him a trim.
I like to think that Tennyson is part Maine Coon. I looked it up to confirm. “The Maine Coon is intelligent and inquisitive…” (yes), talks in soft chirps (yes), enjoys tasty treats (I mean, who doesn’t?), lives peacefully with other pets (Henry disagrees), is friendly (mostly when I’m sleeping), takes everything in stride (not so much), loves to bathe (haven’t tried it... won’t try it... not a chance).
No matter. Henry is generous with his purrs and Tennyson is a higher-order thinker, which is good enough for us.
