When did we first include pets as part of the family? It’s a bit hard to pinpoint.


What I can tell you is that, around 1900, cats might be on the post office payroll or in photos wearing dresses and pajamas. One photographer, Harry Whittier Frees, noted that rabbits were hard to pose, pigs were difficult all around, but kittens were “the most versatile actor.” Go ahead and search the internet yourself – you’ll find kittens flying planes, bowling, or firing canons. Apparently Frees limited his pet portraits to three months of the year since the work was so exhausting.


Incidentally, bringing animals inside is not limited to cats and dogs (or ferrets, bunnies, and lizards, for that matter). On a recent trip to Japan I learned about the magariya, a house in which families and their cherished horses once lived under the same roof.
