Text on the back of this card:
In Vermont, we joke that there are five seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter, mud. (Some sneak in a sixth: sticks.)
To me it makes sense to think of seasons by what’s happening around us versus with planets. Meteorologists start seasons on the first of the month rather than on equinoxes or solstices. And in other places and eras, there could be 24 to 72 seasons based on things like deer shedding antlers, cherry trees blooming, etc. Some folks have two-month seasons such as hot and dry, hot and wet, start of the cool, the very coldest, and more.
I value this connectedness that comes from really noticing the natural world around me.
And then there’s how my cat, Henry, notices the seasons – which is looking at the front door, eyes wide open, asking, “Is it spring yet?” and hoping it’s time for open windows and outside smells.
