Text on the back of this card:

The snowiest place on earth is Sukayu Onsen in the Japanese Alps, which annually hosts about 58 feet of snow. (For reference, that’s three times taller than a giraffe, a shade higher than a brachiosaurus, and almost as long as a bowling lane.) This area is by the Sea of Japan, which reportedly never freezes and creates lots of lake-effect snow.

I read one scientist’s speculation that the perfect snow for snowman-building is five parts snow to one part water – sticky stuff! In Japan, they might use this snow to make yukiusagi or “snowrabbits” with an oblong snowball, two long leaves for ears, and winter berries for eyes. Or perhaps they make snow people, which in Japan have two large snowballs as opposed to the three I commonly see in Vermont.
