I heard a podcast about divers who freed a whale from a net. Before swimming away, the whale gently nudged each diver a few times, then looked each person in the eye. The divers felt this was a thank you, but an animal behaviorist said this was unlikely (he made a fair argument, but I’ll stick with what my heart tells me on this one).
I’ve rescued bunnies in my time, and I’ve heard of friends who aided sharp-taloned owls or pointy-beaked herons. I’ve noticed videos of moose who’d sunk several feet into deep snow and were shoveled out by Nordic skiers (“Now run the other way, not toward us!” one of the skiers hollered). I like to think I’d have the courage to help an animal who could capsize, puncture, or crush me, but I really don’t know if I would. Would you?
