One spring I planted bee balm in our garden and, by summer, I had seen my first hummingbird. I thought this was the most special thing! Now, years later, I count on seeing hummingbirds all summer long – but only when I'm sitting quietly on the back step.
I’ve noticed that when I sit still in nature for long enough, something good always happens. It’s rare that there’s nothing going on – no birds flying overhead, no squirrels twirling from tree to tree, no breezes blowing snowflakes in fun patterns.
Lately I’m pretty content when there’s “nothing going on.” I’ve read that studies correlate boredom with creativity, problem-solving, and new ideas. (Incidentally, I learned about the Torrance Test which measures aspects of creativity such as “fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration.” Google it for a free version!)
