A friend had asked me to recall a favorite childhood memory when I started this illustration. My family used to make long drives to visit my grandparents, and much of that drive was on an evergreen-lined interstate in Maine. The road was long, straight, uninteresting. But when we passed a familiar stand of birch trees on the left, I perked up because I knew we were just minutes from my grandparents’ house. I’ve always loved birch trees.
I recently learned that the white bark of paper birch is an asset in cold climates like ours here in Vermont. The bark reflects light and avoids the rapid heating and cooling that can happen on bright winter days. Birch is also pretty waterproof, making it an excellent choice for canoes.
