Lately I’ve been drawn to the phrase “taking a big swing.” Historically I’m not opposed to taking risks, but generally they have been calculated ones. I always have a backup plan (or five).
But what would it mean to take a big swing? Step up to the plate, with everyone watching, and swing the bat because I can make an impact in that very moment?
I think about how many “big swing” ideas must have seemed ludicrous in their earliest moments. Space travel? Free solo climbing? How about laser surgery on our eyeballs — who decided to give that one a try?
If you take a big swing this year, what might it be?
I don’t know how Fox and Bear got onto that moon, but I know it took gumption. Or innocence. Or ignorance. Definitely some dreaming. And some big-swinging. Probably all of the above.
