On a recent mountain hike, we’d heard reports of bears. We got to the top and relaxed to eat our sandwiches. Suddenly I pointed behind my husband, my eyes wide, voice stammering. “What is it?!??” he said as he turned to see on the rock behind him... ... ... a caterpillar!
I don’t like caterpillars. I’d even say I’m afraid of them. I have a friend who says of deep fears, “Go toward them.” I do for most, but not for caterpillars, nor for sea anemones, nor for mayonnaise (the last is not a fear, but a visceral dislike, nonetheless). I also have intense likes, such as cats and tomatoes.
Don’t we all have these intense inclinations — fears, dislikes, or likes — that seem to have been with us since the beginning of our days? One has to wonder: what’s that all about?
