Text on the back of this card:
When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.
John Muir
We have a giant black walnut tree in our back yard. I learned recently that it is “alternate bearing,” which means that every other year it dumps a motherlode of nuts in our yard. Good news for the squirrels! We like to watch the superhighway of activity as they run with nuts in their jaws to find hiding places around our yard.
Those squirrels will make astounding leaps and somersaults in the trees, by the way. It’s worth the price of admission.
Side note to you gardeners: black walnuts and tomato plants don’t play nice together, owing to something called juglones in the walnuts. It’s good for some things, but not for tomatoes – plant your bee balm there instead! (I learned this the hard way.)
