I’m on the introverted side. In my 20s, a friend and I devised a game called “Who Can Meet the Most People.” At parties we split up and talked to as many people as we could, trying to learn three interesting things from each. This proved to be a good skill later on – but I still prefer reading a book with a cat on my lap.
I once learned about a test of career strengths, including something called “woo.” Huh? Woo? What’s that? I read that woo is getting others to like you. I dismissed woo as superficial and decided it was a skill I didn’t need to have.
Later I went to a community event with a friend. He chatted extra long with one young man, asking how he spent his time. After the event, my friend said, “Wow, that kid really made me work for it.” He explained that he enjoys uncovering what makes a person tick.
Aha! I thought. Woo. What a wonderful thing.
