These six birds dart in and out of the grasses, flowers, and ferns in our yard: chickadee, flicker, woodpecker, robin, hummingbird, and starling. Each card includes my curious discoveries on the back.
Text on the back of this card:
European Starling in the Morning Sun
Some of us have heard that the starling is an invasive bird released in NYC by a Shakespeare enthusiast. There’s question of whether this gent was motivated by Shakespeare or just a pesky caterpillar that munched on his flowers.
In summer months, a starling’s beak turns bright yellow – the mark of a healthy bird. His feathers look black, but they are actually shades of blue, violet, and green.
Apparently starlings are good mimics. (Go right now and google “starling mimic human” for videos. I’m serious.) Perhaps Shakespeare was onto something, having this bird vex Henry IV by repeating the name of his enemy into his ear (”a starling shall be taught to speak nothing but ‘Mortimer,’ and give it him to keep his anger still in motion”).
I mean, of all the ways that evil tracks us down, wouldn’t it feel just a little better if it came from the mouth of a colorful little bird?
