Ruby-Throated Hummingbird in Bloom
Last summer while trimming a petunia, I found myself face-to-face with a ruby-throated hummingbird. I backed away because – well, that beak looked pretty darned sharp.
Hummingbirds go into a low-energy state called torpor during cool temperatures. Body temps drop as much 50 degrees and it can take an hour to warm up – which hummingbirds do by shivering.
A friend of mine told me, “When a hummingbird appears, even the other birds get quiet.” No wonder! The next time you see a hummingbird, offer a standing ovation. She beats her wings 50 times every second and, if you live in the north, she flew over 2000 miles to find you. (And she travelled alone, by the way: hummingbirds migrate solo and not in flocks.)
