These six birds dart in and out of the grasses, flowers, and ferns in our yard: chickadee, flicker, woodpecker, robin, hummingbird, and starling. Each card includes my curious discoveries on the back.

American Robin in the Grass
I can’t tell you how many times I see a bird flying and wonder which bird has those pretty white tail feathers. But when it lands, I say, “Oh. It’s just a robin.”
Now that’s not really fair to this American robin, is it? Look at that bulging belly, so orange you just can’t miss! American robins are common throughout North America, which is probably why I feel ho-hum when I see them.
But sometimes I try to act like I’m a visitor who’s never seen an American robin before. And then I see that redbreast and with fresh eyes I say, "He's really quite pretty with his orange belly, no?"
