These six birds dart in and out of the grasses, flowers, and ferns in our yard: chickadee, flicker, woodpecker, robin, hummingbird, and starling. Each card includes my curious discoveries on the back.

Hairy Woodpecker on a Tree Trunk

This little guy is a hairy woodpecker. He’s a bit bigger and his bill a little longer than similar black-and-white species.

I hear more woodpeckers than I see – and when I do, I look up into the trees and try to locate the source of the drumming. Experts say there are 26(ish!) beats and drumming is a way of communicating, like a birdsong.

Hairy woodpeckers use that long tail to balance on tree trunks as they peck and feed. And, often they sweep up the path of larger woodpeckers, picking up whatever bugs were left behind. As we say in New England: “that’s smaaaaht!”
