Gathering seeds and twigs between seasons are the chickadee, bluejay, junco, cardinal and crow — with my curious discoveries about each on the back of the card.

Text on the back of this card:

Digging into some junco fun facts revealed five variations in the US, some with decidedly different markings from this Oreo-ensembled little guy. These variations can breed with each other and offer some of the fastest adaptations among vertebrates, a fact which sciencey people find pretty nifty. In fact, the junco is one of the most studied birds for learning how new species happen.

You’ll mostly find juncos under your feeder or on the ground of your fall garden. They show up just as the cold starts, earning them the name “snowbird.” Juncos like to swipe up the seeds that have fallen at the end of the season including from zinnias and cosmos (two of this gardener’s favorites, too!).
