Gathering seeds and twigs between seasons are the chickadee, bluejay, junco, cardinal and crow — with my curious discoveries about each on the back of the card.
Text on the back of this card:
I learned that male and female cardinals often pair for life. Their conical beaks are well-shaped to help them crack open the seeds and grains that they like to eat most, and sometimes males pass a seed to their female partner with these pointy beaks. Cardinal pairs tend to go it alone and protect their home from other birds, including from other cardinals.
Until winter happens, that is. In the colder months the males gather in flocks because there’s power in numbers when it comes to finding food.
Unlike a bluejay whose color is an illusion of light, the male cardinal’s color comes from pigment in the foods he eats.
