Gathering seeds and twigs between seasons are the chickadee, bluejay, junco, cardinal and crow — with my curious discoveries about each on the back of the card.
Text on the back of this card:
Chickadees are in good company among the passerine birds – songbirds who have three toes to the front and one toward the rear. A tendon in the foot automatically tightens when the bird lands, explaining why he doesn’t budge when a branch is blown around to all get-out.
Chickadees don’t migrate, but from time to time a great irrupation happens when a larger number of chickadees – mostly young’uns – flock to an area with more food. This was the case in 2022 when large numbers of black-capped chickadees left Canada to tour the Maine coast.
That’s all well and good, but what I like most about chickadees is their bright white cheeks.
